πŸ“Έ Foto Friday: Southern Fox Squirrel πŸ“Έ

Introducing the magnificent Southern Fox Squirrel! 🐿️ These stunning rodents thrive on a diet of longleaf pine seeds, turkey oak acorns, and fungi. With two breeding cycles annually, most females have only one litter per year. You can catch sight of these beauties from the east panhandle down to the south-central region of Florida.

Recently, this charming young mother was spotted at the Dade City Pioneer Museum in Dade City, Florida. With her evident nursing, she stood watchfully, her curiosity piqued by humans. Despite her initial caution, she graciously posed before returning to the safety of a nearby tree.

Where flowers bloom so does hope.
~ Lady Bird Johnson

Butterfly weed, Asclepias tuberosa, is also known as Butterfly milkweed. It is the most popular native species of milkweed in Florida. This hardy perennial grows 1-2 feet tall and is abundant throughout Florida. Its bright orange flowers bloom in late summer through fall and attract various pollinators.

Butterfly weed is readily available at native plant nurseries. Once established, it thrives in dry, sandy soil in sun or part shade. Monarchs rely on milkweeds in the genus Asclepias for survival since it is the only plant monarch caterpillars will eat. Plant some in your wildflower garden to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Today, we pause to remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms. These freedoms allow us to continue our quest for knowledge through exploration and science. We are free to have our voices heard and to advocate for what is most important to us.
.
Freedom also brings a responsibility to the land and water they protected for us and our future generations. This Memorial Day, honor those who gave it all by protecting Florida's wildlife and our shared ecosystems.

- Slow down when boating to protect manatees.
- Be respectful of nesting birds at the beach.
- Reduce plastic use, recycle what you can, and dispose of trash properly at your picnic or barbeque.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.
